1992, some of you guys may have your own reminder about this year. In fact, This is the year DC Comics writer Paul Dini improvised the character of Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel (also known as Harley Quinn)  for the episode of Joker’s Favor. It was like a cameo character for Batman: The Animated Series. Mr. Paul Dini got the basic inspiration for this character from another soap opera character which was performed by his friend named Arleen Sorkin. In an episode of soap opera called “Days of Our Lives,” actress Arleen Sorkin did a character full of craziness with a jester outfit.

Arleen Sorkin was the first lady to do Harley Quinn’s voice for the animated series. As the episodes continued Harley became more attractive and her appearances became more often.

Her Appearances

After hearing the name of Harley Quinn, more usually scenarios of Suicide Squad movie comes to our mind first. Of course, there is a reason for that. But that’s not the first screen portrayal of Harley. Her first live-action appearance was actually on the short-lived TV show called Birds of Prey in 2002. It ended up with only one season. So, people hardly remember it. But the original portrayal of Harley Quinn was in the Batman: The Animated Series as a sidekick of Joker in 1992, who worked as a henchwench and helped Joker to escape from Arkham Asylum. In comic book canon, she made her first appearance in The Batman Adventures #12 in 1993. She was originally intended to be a cameo role, but the character was played well and proved so useful that she ended up utilizing more and more. She became a beloved and integral part of DCAU and comic canon both.

Transformation Of Character

Dr. Harleen Quinzel used to be a psychiatric intern at Arkham Asylum who was a model student and pure definition of a disciplined girl from Gotham city.  While researching the madcaps at Arkham, her mind got stuck with one particular inmate named Joker. Then she convinced the doctors to analyze him ambitiously.  In that time, she fell madly in love with him. She helped him to escape from the asylum on few occasions and because of this incident, Harleen was suspected by the authorities. They canceled her license and placed her in her own cell. During a massive earthquake in Gotham city, she was able to flee away and became the sidekick of Clown Prince of Crime, Joker.

Devotion To Love Or Pure Insanity

Well, we don’t think so that we could be able to give their relationship a perfect name. How about “Romance of Insanity?” It suits them a lot. After she fled away from asylum cell, she chased the Joker down. But she wasn’t welcomed in his life and thrown into a vat of chemicals. Moments later, he pulled her up from there and they got a chemical wedding, I suppose.

She used to call Puddin as Joker all the time. That sounds too lovely.  But Joker’s treatment to Harley wasn’t that greatest. He abused her verbally and physically tortured her. He used her on so many occasions to get in or out from different circumstances. Even after lying on many occasions, she forgave him and returned to him again and again. That’s totally insane. In fact, here insanity was dominating most of the time instead of love. Though she had always been seeking for Puddin’s love, the reaction from Puddin wasn’t same for most of the time. That’s why we often saw her beaten by him.

Independent Mysterious Personality

Harley is generally known as Joker’s love interest and sidekick. But there is much more to her than that.  If you look at her appearances closely, you’ll find that she’s more solo these days and doing her own as a villain or antihero.  Whenever she breaks up with her MR. J, she goes to Poison Ivy.  They share a relationship, though it’s not monogamous. Sometimes we’ve seen her showing feelings for Batman and Deadshot as well. These things make her typically more or less complicated but solo at the same time.  In the film Suicide Squad, we saw it again. She is a girl with a great sense of humor and intelligence as well.

“Inside, you’re ugly. Harley Quinn: We all are! Except for him. [looks at Killer Croc] Harley Quinn: He’s ugly on the outside, too.” Can you remember this punch dialogue in a serious moment of suicide squad? She is the ultimate choice to produce stuff like this always. Because of her popularity, she is getting her own standalone comic recently once again.

She As A Game Character

herley quinn in video gameHarley was presented to the gamers on few occasions so far. The first time she was featured in Lego Batman: The Videogame in 2008. In that game, she was a playable character who was carrying a pistol and her giant mallet and could perform high jumps. Two more editions of that game were produced back then. Later on, she was featured in Batman: Arkham series from 2009.  This trio has different stories and gameplay.  We guess people loved to play as Harley in Batman: Arkham city mostly.  In 2013 we got the chance to play as Harley once again in Injustice: Gods Among Us. That was a blockbuster of that year. And now, what are you going to say about Injustice 2 of this year?  Haven’t you played it yet? Then you must, buddy. I swear you’ll love it to play as Harley in there.

Do you tend to think, Harley is an overrated and overhyped character even now? She is not at all. When you’ll go for her sales value for DC Entertainment, you’ll get thundered by the number.  Those who care about Batman and Joker, love Harley as well. That’s more likely to be the universal truth for DC lovers.
